Celebrate Your Child’s Interests: Dinosaur Snickerdoodle Cookies
When you become a mother to a son, some things are certain. First, you will become an expert in every type of construction truck during the toddler stage and the passion for all things trucks and cars never seems to end. I imagine this is equivalent to a little girl’s love for all things princesses. Second, your son’s interest in dinosaurs enters into their young life and their imaginative play with these colorful, detailed figurines is endless. After receiving his first pack of dinosaurs for his birthday, courtesy of his Aunt Mary, his interest in dinosaurs soon followed. Of course that require us to visit a nearby dinosaur state park and see actual dinosaur tracks. After this experience I knew I had to make a batch of cookies inspired by this new passion. Snickerdoodle cookies are typically drop cookies that puff up and spread on your baking sheet. I did some research and found a few recipes that would accomplish a great cut out cookie and maintain that classic taste. My kitchen helper loves all things cinnamon and sugar so these cookies were already going to be a hit, but when I told him that we were going to use his dinosaur figurines to press tracks into the cookie dough, well excitement was an understatement. They resembled the tracks we just saw at the state park and he was in amazement. If anything this recipe is a great canvas to take your kitchen helpers passions and turn it into a tasty sweet treat.

Cook Time: 12-14 mins
- 1/2 Cup - Cold Butter
- 1/2 Cup - Sugar
- 1/8 Cup - Apple Sauce
- 1/2 Teaspoon - Vanilla Extract
- 1/2 Teaspoon - Cinnamon
- 1 1/2 Cup - All Purpose Flour
- 1/2 Teaspoon - Baking Powder
- 1/8 Teaspoon -Salt
- 1/4 Teaspoon -Cream of Tartar
- 1 Tablespoon - Milk
- CINNAMON SUGAR DIP:
- 1/2 Teaspoon - Cinnamon
- 1/8 Cup Sugar
- Line two baking sheets with parchment paper
- With a hand mixer, beat the cold butter and sugar until fluffy.
- Add applesauce, vanilla and cinnamon and mix until incorporated.
- In a separate bowl, mix the flour, baking powder, salt and cream of tartar.
- Add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients. Once incorporated the batter will be crumbles, now add the milk. After the milk is added the crumbles will come together as a true cookie batter.
- Roll cookie batter onto a floured surface and/or a silicone mat 1/4-18" thick. Use cookie cutters to cut out your desired shapes and use a dinosaur to make the track impressions. In a small dish mix the cinnamon and sugar dip and sprinkle on each cookie.
- Once one baking sheet is filled with cookies, transfer the baking sheet to the refrigerator (or freezer, I didn't have room) while your oven is heating to 350
- Fill your second baking sheet with cookies and add to the refrigerator too. Once oven reaches temperature, bake for 12-14 minutes or until the edges start turning a golden brown.
